Visiting Alton Towers Water Park – Useful Tips

How to Get the Most Out of Alton-Towers' Water Theme-Park in England

Aug 31, 2009 Christine Fadhley

Alton Towers in Staffordshire, UK, is famed for its huge adventure park. Tucked around the back is the Water Park that fewer people have heard of.

Alton Towers, the UK's answer to Disney Land and Disney World, is set in the beautiful Staffordshire countryside. Most people will be familiar with the outdoor park with its heart stopping rides, but fewer people have heard of the Caribbean themed Water Park that is "hidden" around the back of the outdoor park.

Whilst the outdoor park is open only during the summer months (closing at the end of October) the water park is open all year round. For families who are looking for exercise and fun for the family, a day out at the Alton Towers Water Park is a very attractive choice.

What Attractions Does Alton Towers Water Park Offer?

The water park, located right next to the Splash Landings Hotel, offers a wonderful and frenetic mixture of indoor water activities set in a tropically warm environment. The baby pools are shallow enough for the youngest members of the family and children from two upwards can play in their own lagoon. For the adults there are slides, bubble pools, water cannons, the wacky waterworks tree house, the lazy river, the tipping bucket and Lagoona Bay. These names hardly convey the full mayhem that the visitor experiences.

Wacky Waterworks Treehouse and Other Features at Alton Towers Water Park

This feature is a complex climbing experience that includes rope bridges and climbing nets. The Treehouse towers over the lagoon and much fun is to be had by shooting jets of water from water cannons or emptying buckets over the unwary swimmer below.

Although the tipping bucket sounds tame, it is a huge pivoting cistern that fills and empties itself in a vast deluge of water on the excited visitors at roughly five minute intervals. For those who want yet more excitement there are slides that incorporate quite wide turns or one can float down the lazy river in a ring. The lazy river flows between canyon like sides and is powered by enormous underwater jets.

The Master Blaster is the main ride - a flume that starts at the top of the water park and snakes around the park giving riders a view over the lagoon with its geysers and waterfalls, before emptying into the outdoor pool. The heated outdoor pool is warm enough to use even during the cold winter months.

Planning a Visit to Alton Towers Water Park - Tickets, etc.

Although tickets can be bought at the entrance, it is cheaper to purchase on line. Those who live in close enough proximity may benefit from purchasing an annual pass which at the time of writing is almost the same price as four adult day passes. Visitors to the hotel have free access to the Water Park included in their tariff.

To help reduce the costs it is a good idea to pack a picnic. There are abundant benches and nooks that can be used as picnicking places and bringing one's own food is permitted.

Safety Standards at Alton Towers Water Park

The park requires visitors to abide by their strict adult to child ratio regulation. This means that children under four years of age must be accompanied by an adult. For older children, between 5 and 9 years the ratio is one adult to two children. They define an adult as a responsible person over the age of 16.
