Looking for a little excitement, a new experience, and a radical change from the regular routine? An adventure vacation might just be the answer.
What is Adventure TravelAdventure travel is a type of tourism or vacation that encourages travelers to step out of their normal everyday lives and seek experiences that are unfamiliar, and even a little risky. Often taking place in remote and/or exotic areas, adventure vacations encourage travelers to step off the beaten path and expect the unexpected. Adventure travel involves either extreme physical activity, a type of interaction with nature, or a cultural exchange in a different part of the world than one’s home. African safaris, whitewater rafting in the Colorado river, bungee-jumping in Europe, and hiking the Himalayas, are all examples of adventure vacations. Why Embark on an Adventure VacationThe adventure travel industry is growing by leaps and bounds. And it’s no wonder. Adventure travel stretches the mind, body, and soul, and contrary to what some people think, it doesn’t have to be dangerous. Certainly there are some high-risk adventure vacations that are available to travelers, but there are also very low-risk options available. Adventure tourism gains much of its excitement by allowing its participants to step outside of their regular routine and comfort zone. Whether it’s due to the culture shock from being in a different part of the world, the taking on of a task that requires a significant effort or risk, or the danger (either real or perceived) that comes from certain adventure vacations, most adventure travelers experience extreme satisfaction from the journey. Embarking on an adventure vacation can be rewarding both physically and mentally. Spending time in nature, interacting with people from different cultures, and developing new skills can help to give a person self-confidence, a wider perspective, and a new outlook on life. Adventure travel can be life-changing. How to Choose an Adventure Travel VacationFirst of all, decide what type of travel adventure suits you best. Looking for something extreme like hiking up Mt. Kilimanjaro or rock climbing up the side of a cliff? Or is something a little more low-key such as floating over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon more appropriate? Either way, decide what type of adventure you have in mind and then do some research. Assess what kind of risk factor you’re willing to deal with and plan accordingly. A good place to start is the Adventure Travel Trade Association which offers up to date information on the adventure travel industry, including links to such trusted sites as Adventure Travel: Inside the Outside. There you can browse around and check out what kinds of vacations are available. Before embarking on any adventure travel vacation be sure to take the appropriate steps. Visit a doctor to make sure you’re physically fit enough to handle it, seek a travel doctor’s attention and be sure to get any necessary shots and/or vaccines that may be required, and most definitely research the area you’ll be visiting and the travel company you’ll be dealing with. Adventure travel is a worthwhile activity for anyone looking for a new experience. No matter what the risk factor, whether high or low, what’s truly important is the experience of seeing a new part of the world, making friends in foreign places, and experiencing something you’ve never experienced before. So do some research, be safe, and have fun.
